The comprehensive MFA examination consists of a written thesis and a concentrated body of work that will be presented in a master of fine arts exhibition. Each entering student is assigned two faculty advisors by the department based on student input and faculty availability. The initial faculty advisors are charged with the responsibility of reviewing the first-year student’s progress a minimum of three times in the academic year and may or may not eventually become a member of the student’s thesis committee. Satisfactory student progress is determined by course grades and the quality of the student’s work.. Students are encouraged to take elective courses from the wider offerings at DMA and UCLA at large.

You may also take advantage of CMU’s stature as a renowned liberal arts research university to pursue research opportunities with faculty and take courses across campus to broaden and deepen your education. Even though designers typically work in service of others and respond to specific prompts, we recognize the importance of your unique interests. Our MDes courses provide you with the autonomy to direct your individual work and offer support as you chart your personal path and discover your design “voice”. Technology Design Foundations
Courses required in the first year of the MDes program, except for Thesis Prep, comprise the MPS curriculum. The MPS offers you a practical and attainable means of developing a strong, forward-thinking design practice. You may also choose to pursue a course of study in areas such as business, human-computer interaction, or public policyor return to work in your previous field with the advantage of design skills and perspectives. No matter what direction you choose when charting your path, our MA will provide you with a strong design education that will inform your next steps and establish a positive trajectory for achieving your professional goals. The School of Design welcomes students who hold undergraduate degrees in a design-based field and have at least one year of professional experience to apply to our MDes program.
A Berkeley Education
We also ask you to include a brief sentence or paragraph explaining the nature of the work and your role in its creation, so that we can understand what the project/document/picture represent and what your contribution was. We suggest that your portfolio should include a minimum of 5-7 works and possibly more. We would also prefer to see any sketches, illustrations, or renderings that show your ability to express creative ideas visually.

Master in Design Studies (MDes)

School of Architecture - Woodbury University
All MFA visual arts students receive sizable, fully private, and autonomous studios with 24-hour access for the full duration of their studies including the summer between their first and second years. Studios are located at the Civic Square Building (CSB) or the Livingston Arts Building (LAB). All students, once trained, have 24-hour access to all facilities, labs, and shops within both buildings. Throughout the program, the studio work is driven by the student’s interests and evolves through reading, reflective writing, presentations, class discussions, and critiques with faculty and peers.
For students who want to earn a first professional degree in a design discipline and students with undergraduate design degrees who want to take their education and professional development to the next level. Through thesis project work and your choice of electives, craft a generalist degree in design for interaction, or develop a concentration in design for services or social innovation. Pursue one of three USC Roski undergraduate programs, including a BA Art, a studio-based and immersive BFA Art, or a BFA Design with 2D and 3D applications. Our open curriculum encourages you to explore, combine, mix, match and move freely among media. MDes students are expected to complete , a professional development requirement for the program.

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last two years of upper-division undergraduate work is also required. The applicant’s bachelor’s degree need not be in media arts, though applicants with degrees in interdisciplinary programs that emphasize media arts are preferred. Additional experience with video, interactive media, or 3D modeling and animation is expected. Students in the MA program possess a wide range of professional and academic expertise. Holding undergraduate degrees in disciplines such as journalism, global studies, psychology, economics, engineering, and arts management, they bring to the program unique experiences, perspectives, and cultural insights from around the world that enrich learning for all students. If you apply for Financial Aid, your cost of attendance will be determined for you and may vary based on your residency status and your living arrangements (on-campus, off-campus, or living at home/with relatives). Your cost of attendance is the maximum amount of financial aid you may receive for one academic year. The cost of the BFA/MA and BFA/MAT Art Education Programs include the tuition and fees listed above, and one year of tuition and fees at the graduate level. The program also lets you collaborate with faculty who support students in synthesizing the perspectives and contexts you will encounter in practice.
Beginning in the mid-1990’s, the School of Design was one of the first programs worldwide to offer a master’s degree in interaction design. Our graduate offerings have grown and evolved in alignment with the field and are widely considered among the best in the world. In rankings of design schools based on career outcomes, our graduate programs consistently come out on top. Our alumni acquire some of the most desirable positions in the field, with multinational companies, design firms, and nonprofits. Some of our alumni become design researchers and educators, and others start their own businesses.
In addition, students may be invited for an interview, either in-person or remote, and should be prepared to explain their qualifications, motivations to apply to the program, and goals for the program. Yes, a subset of applications are usually waitlisted and additional students may be added in on a space available basis. LACMA might be a de facto museum of contemporary art, but frankly it’s not a very good one.
